Many different indigenous peoples live in the world. Each of them have their own unique creation myths and various spirits appear in their lives. In addition, they have performed various rituals in accordance with their own animistic beliefs. The statues, masks, textiles, and tools used in these rituals have developed distinctive patterns and forms. The gods and spirits were also depicted on the tools used in daily life. This exhibition introduces works of art related to the people's prayers from Africa, Oceania, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Himalayas, and Asia.
- General Admission Adult 800yen. Students 700yen. Children under 12 is free (accompanied by an adult).

- SCULPTURE OF AFRICANART

Until the early 20th century, the "beauty" sought by Europeans was photographic realism and well-formed shapes. However, In Africa, these things were not considered as "beauty." Instead, their way of beauty was recognized in the form of greatly deformed expressing spirituality and imagery or distorted forms existing in nature. This exhibition introduces sculptures which emphasize spirituality the most to explore the origin of African “beauty”

Diverse ethnic groups of the native people live in the world. They have developed their own culture and aesthetic since time immemorial. Each of them has various rituals and customs that statues, masks, textiles, or tools with unique patterns and forms were created to express their pure feeling. These are the form of their prayers. This exhibition introduces distinctive aesthetic sense of the various native people from Africa, Oceania, Indonesia, Philippines, Himalaya, and Asia.

THE FOREST OF SCULPTURES:

This is the open air exhibition of sculptors who work in the southern foot of Yatsugatake at African Art Museum Garden. Artworks of 17 sculptors who used the stone, wood, or mental infusing various thoughts turning into their joy of creation will be presented in the exhibition. The collaboration of the bright natural light, clear air, voice of the green nature and individual sculptures appeals vital feeling.
